Bathroom renovation
How it started
This bathroom is the main bathroom for our family of 5! Over the years of owning this house, we have updated things in stages. The jacuzzi tub was new, the tile in the shower was new, I had painted the vanity, I had put a new mirror up, new faucet, and updated the toilet. I had even done a board and batten wall next to the shower and hung hooks for towels. The final step was updating the flooring, or so we thought!
The vision
Originally I just wanted to update the flooring, which is what makes this project a bit unique. Although, this does happen during home renovation projects. We never know what we are going to find when we pull up flooring or cut into walls. this is unfortunately part of the process sometimes. We weren’t intending on doing a complete bathroom remodel. After it became a complete tear out and I had to make design decisions, functionality was the most important factor. Five family members use this bathroom to get ready for work and school every day. We also love using the jacuzzi tub, so this room needed to be an oasis as well.
During
We went to tear the flooring up and you could see that the water from the toilet and the tub had gotten under the floor. It reached all the way to the vanity, which was original the house, and it was soaking up water as well. It turned into a ripple effect of updating, which is how we ended up with a full bathroom remodel. I could have just replaced the toe kick on the vanity, but I decided to replace it entirely since we were updating the flooring. With the vanity removed, I decided to put fresh drywall behind it. Ripping the drywall out behind the vanity turned into moving the outlet box, which turned into drywalling the entire bathroom.
This ended up being a blessing in disguise because when we ripped the drywall out, we noticed that the plumbing for the sink was still copper pipe which can get tiny pinholes over time. Rather than patching this, we updated the plumbing to make it sound for many years to come.
Luckily no mold was found anywhere in the bathroom, which was a huge blessing. We aired the room out for a week and painted with Kilz primer before new drywall was installed and flooring was laid.
The final reveal
After 7 long months, we finally had a fully renovated bathroom! Our bathroom was out of commission for so long because it wasn’t on the schedule with contractors and it was being worked on between client projects. It was never intended to be a full bathroom renovation in the first place. I can truly relate to clients on a deeper level after going through this experience in my own home. This is an unfortunate part of the renovation process sometimes! Now, we have a beautifully designed, functional bathroom for our entire family to use. Everything was chosen with a purpose, from he towel rack above the toilet to the towel hooks on the wall by the shower. Our homes should bring us joy and work for our family and lifestyle. Now, our bathroom does!
