Beyond Sports & Succulents: Rediscovering Hobbies and Finding Passions As a 30-Something Mom

Today, I'm diving into a topic that's been on my mind a lot lately—hobbies. Remember when we were kids and discovering new interests seemed like the most exciting adventure?

Well, I've realized that as adults, we can still experience that same rush of excitement and discovery when we embrace new hobbies. Let me share my journey of finding, embracing, and reveling in hobbies I never thought I'd have, all in the glorious world of adulthood.

To be honest, I always believed that hobbies were reserved for those in the sports phase of life.

Back in the day, I was a sports enthusiast, an athlete who thrived on competition and the camaraderie of an athletic team. But as the years rolled by and life happened—three wonderful kids, a house to manage, and a business to run—the sports phase seemed so long ago. I found myself in a bit of a rut wondering if I had any hobbies at all anymore. The thought of not having those usual sports-related activities left a void and it wasn’t until a conversation with a good friend left me thinking about how my hobbies and interests have changed over the years.

What are my hobbies as a mom?

We chatted about playing with plants and she started picking my brain about plant care and styling, and that's when it hit me—I had an unexpected knowledge about plants and propagation! Snake plants, ziti plants (well, actually, it's called ZZ plant, but "ziti" does have a fun ring to it!), and pathos plants had become my green companions as great starter plants. Over the past year, I had unknowingly become a plant lover. My little pots of greenery brought vibrancy and life into my home and i truly enjoy learning more about them and helping others get started.

This realization sparked my brain into thinking about what else I love. Organization had always been a quirky passion of mine. Even as a kid, I was the master of tidying up drawers, arranging shoes, and giving my bedroom that extra touch of neatness (even when I was supposed to be in bed, my parents would often find me secretly up, organizing my room!). In college, I even pocketed some extra cash by cleaning and organizing messy dorm rooms—a skill I didn't know could be so lucrative at $10-$20 a dorm room (depending on the mess)! Fast forward to today, and my knack for organization has blossomed into a business. I help people declutter, decorate, and turn their spaces into havens of style and functionality. Plus, I absolutely adore jazzing up my own living space on a regular basis. Creating a warm, organized, and relaxing home for my family is a primary joy in my life.

Okay, my creativity and love for decor also make themed parties a fun outlet for me.I thrive on problem-solving and crafting unique experiences for weddings and birthdays!  And when I'm not elbow-deep in party planning, you'll find me scouring the internet for the best sales. I've honed my skills in deciphering reviews and identifying top-notch brands for bargain deals. Trust me, the satisfaction of scoring a great deal is beyond compare!

Mom Hobby: Cooking vs. Baking

Cooking is my jam—I can whip up a mean meal packed with wholesome goodness in a pinch and on a budget. Baking, however, is an entirely different story and not in my wheelhouse. But that's what hobbies are all about, right? Embracing the ups and downs, the successes and the occasional flops, and reveling in the process of learning.

As a mom of three, I've also taken it upon myself to be an example of positive screen-time behavior. Reading has become a cherished part of my daily routine, and I'm determined to set an example for my kids. There's something magical about flipping through the pages of a book, letting your imagination soar beyond the confines of screens. It's a habit that's not only brought joy but also structure to my life.

Walking—a simple yet transformative hobby. It's a time for mental clarity, a reprieve from the hustle and chaos, and a gentle exercise for both body and mind. As I step outside, I feel a sense of renewal and peace. It's remarkable how something so basic can have such a profound impact.

In this journey of self-discovery, I've come to realize that hobbies aren't just for the sports phase of life; they're for every phase. They're the threads that weave together the fabric of our individuality, passions that bring color to the canvas of our days. It's never too late to explore new interests, embrace your quirks and talents, and find joy in the everyday.

So, here's to trying new things, finding unexpected passions, and celebrating the beautiful chaos of adulthood. Cheers to being a 35-year-old explorer of hobbies and a lifelong learner!
