Dressing Your Bed is a Necessity
The mattress. I know it’s expensive. I know it’s overwhelming. I know they can be soft, hard, and everything in-between. I know you’ve probably slept on a mattress that totally sucks whether it was your own or you stayed on one at a hotel or airbnb and you decided that you would just suck it up. BUT WHY?!?! There are literally so many good mattresses out there, you just have to do your research.
My hubby and I recently got a new mattress. It was one of those ones that gets sent in the mail. Now, I’ll be honest, I was a little skeptical. In fact, it was one of those brands that when they send it to you, you need to take it out and let it breathe. After a couple of days, it gets to actual size and you start to wonder how the heck they got it inside the box to begin with. Once I pushed past my skepticism, I discovered that this is the best mattress we have ever slept on. It’s essentially a knock off Tempur-Pedic, but my goodness it is the best.
Once you take the leap and find your dream mattress next up is finding a comforter. Choosing a comforter is more than just picking a color and / or pattern that you like. You want to get a quality comforter, one that covers your bed AND a good amount of the frame. The point is you don't want to see the mattress AT ALL. That is key. Secondly, it’s not make or break, but it is definitely helpful when you buy a comforter that has shams. Shams match the comforter. And trust me, shams have come a long way and are totally worth it.
After you pick the right comforter, one with shams included, we dress the bed. Shams are to be placed on the bed first flat, followed by the pillow that you sleep with. You now have four pillows on the bed. Next, it is about bringing elegance and cozy comfort to your vibe. You then add a 20x30 large fluffy pillow. This is your biggest pillow and one that mimics a couch. We want this to mimic a couch for when you’re reading and want to cozy up against your not so cozy headboard. You want one big pillow for each side of the bed. After that, I usually want to add two or three throw pillows. These small pillows can either be the same texture or a different texture from the others.
The main thing to note is that a mixture of texture is really what makes your bed look more high end. For example, I currently have two big plush pillows that are blush colored. They have a slip I can unzip to wash or change out. In front of that, I have an 18x18 square pillow with a little fringe. This pillow is a different color and infant of the lumbar pillow I use that would fit any color palette; however, it has the most texture. I like to keep this pillow on our chair so that I can get cozy and read by putting a pillow that size and shape under my arms.
Are you seeing the big picture yet? Pillows dress your bed and make your room look more high end and a lot of them are even functional. At night when I take my throw pillows off the bed I simply put them on my bench or chair. Having these pillows only takes an extra three or four minutes a day to put on the bed, and it’s worth it.
When your bed is styled and feels beautiful, there is less of a chance that you will want to get back in your bed to take a nap–especially for my work at home or stay at homers. I personally am a napper, so when I am stressed or overwhelmed, if my bed is not made it's super easy to take a nap instead of getting tasks done. Don’t be like me! Lastly, to top your bed off you want one or two throw blankets of different textures or colors and then you are good to go!
