Home is a Feeling not a Place

Your home is so much more than just a place… it’s a feeling. Your house is the place. It’s created from materials and filled with things–things that we collect, things that we feel like are a necessity, things that we want, things that we feel are important.

Your home, however, is a feeling, and it’s created from moments with loved ones, filled with memories, built from love, and a constant space of safety.

Can you think of a house or a place that you have been to, maybe even lived in that didn’t feel like a home? You probably felt uninspired, cold, stuck, and out of place. In these places, in these houses, we tend to spend most of our time outside of them–paying for the office space, traveling to the coffee shops, being hosted by friends. We only come back to this place or this house to sleep, to eat a meal, and to do basic human things. I’ve been there, and I’ve always dreamt of more for myself, more for my family, more for others.

Now, can you think of a house that you have been to, maybe even lived in that did feel like home? You probably had much different feelings than those above. You didn’t travel every other day to go get coffee because you felt the warmth in your home, and of course, you finally hosted all of your family and friends to dinner, to brunch, and to game nights because you felt proud of your home and wanted to share love with them.

If you feel like you can’t relate because you’ve only dreamt of having a feeling of home, well, that’s okay. We can create this together. The fact that you have been dreaming of this feeling, of this space, is a start. You may feel like you are, oh so far off, but you have already begun.

Many of us feel guilty when we decide that maybe we do want to spend money on the things we can do in our home to feel more inspired about life. It’s often hard to see at the beginning of the project how much impact the finished project will have on us, especially with those less tangible things, like feelings. Let’s knock it off!

I want your home to be the space where you can do it all–raise your kids, live with your honey, work on your passions, create memories, and feel truly at home. It is possible and there is no need to feel guilty.

Trusting a professional to bring your vision to life can save you money and heartache. It can be hard to visualize a space, overwhelming to pick so many pieces, and tough to create the right balance of beauty and functionality. This is where I can come in and work some magic to help you create a space your family can really live in and enjoy.

4 things to consider when creating a home not just a house:

  • Built on love

  • Filled with memories

  • Functional for your needs

  • Find an even balance of old and new pieces

When your home is built on love, you begin to want to deepen the relationships you have inside of it. Your relationship with yourself gets better, the relationship with your spouse gets better, the relationship with your kids gets better. You (and your family) are the product of your environment. Your space should be joyful!

Filling your home with memories comes from you opening your home to others. It’s sharing your experiences with others, sharing your gifts with others, and in turn collecting memories, not just “things”, that will fill your home with more warmth than anything.

Recently, so many people have felt that their home was made for one thing and one thing only. Human needs are: sleeping, relaxing, and eating. All of a sudden we needed this space to do it all. We had to work, eat, sleep, relax, AND cultivate relationships in our home. However, most homes weren’t made to do so! Functionality will bring you joy in your space.

It is natural to want to replace all your current decor in an attempt to create the space you want, but what makes a house feel like a home is the perfect mix of old and new items. Nothing can replace the feeling you get when you see a piece of home decor that has a warm memory attached to it.

Your home should be made to be the place where you feel your best. This is more than just buying the most beautiful home on the block or the one on your vision board. It’s sitting with yourself and finding out what your true needs and wants are. It's time to make your space your dream home with some things old, some things new, and a little help from me to you!
