Living Room Design With Kids In Mind

Every family is different, and your living room setup should reflect that. I have three energetic girls who, although not toddlers anymore, still require a bit of caution. Let’s be honest, I do not trust a cup of coffee on a coffee table and any surface tends to end up as fair game to become a diving board. Because of this, I know that a coffee table doesn't make sense for our space and instead, I opt for a heavy, tufted ottoman to rest my feet on. I especially like the kind that will not push away.  I place a wooden serving tray on it to provide a stable surface for drinks and snacks. This choice also minimizes the risk of any accidental bumps or spills.

For seating, I have a three-person couch and a love seat that I arrange in an L-shape. This creates an intimate and cozy atmosphere, perfect for family movie nights or game evenings and hosting friends.. We also have a well-loved, slightly beat-up comfy chair that has been through it all with us, from movie marathons to sick days and hot cocoa. It adds character and comfort to our living room setup.

The focal point of our living room is the TV, placed on the opposite side of the seating area, making it easily visible from every angle. This turns your living room into a rectangle shape. I suggest avoiding placing your couches right against the walls if possible. This creates a more conversational and inviting atmosphere. You can place windows, high tables, or just empty space behind your couches.

Anchor Your Space

To anchor the space, consider adding an area rug, even if you have carpet. Position the front feet of your furniture on the rug to create a cohesive and defined area within the room. It not only enhances the aesthetic but also provides a soft and comfortable surface underfoot.

When it comes to coffee tables if that fits your needs more, you have options. While I prefer a tufted ottoman for safety and comfort, Amazon offers an excellent selection of wooden coffee tables if that's more your vibe. For added convenience and a touch of tradition, I also incorporate end tables. These serve as practical surfaces for drinks or snacks and provide storage for blankets, to make sure my guests feel at home and welcome.

Older Kids? Finally Able To Have Adult Areas Again?

You might consider having a separate living room or sitting room for families with older children. In this case, a two-seat loveseat and a pair of colorful chairs can add a vibrant touch to the space.

The key to a well-arranged living room is to tailor it to your family's specific needs and style. Whether you prioritize safety, comfort, or a pop of color, there are endless ways to create a welcoming and functional space for your loved ones to enjoy. Take these tips as a starting point, but don't be afraid to get creative and make your living room a reflection of your family's unique personality and lifestyle.
